Januvia (Sitagliptin Phosphate) is a new drug used with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adult patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. FDA has approved the use of this drug, as a DPP-4 inhibitor in the United States for curing the condition of Type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes: There is an elevated condition of blood sugar levels or glucose in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes. Under this condition the body is unable to make enough insulin or the liver releases a higher quantity of glucose than what is required.
Januvia cannot be prescribed for patients who suffer from type 1 diabetes or with diabetic ketoacidosis.
Sitagliptin should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis
How does Januvia work?
Januvia tablets enhance a natural body system which lowers the blood sugar levels in the incretin system. As blood sugar gets elevated, incretins help in regulating high blood sugar levels by prompting the pancreas to increase insulin and putting a stop to the production of glucose by the liver.
What is the recommended dose?
Januvia is an oral prescription drug that is taken only once a day. It can be taken with or without food and the dose administered is 100mg.
Are there any side effects?
Like all medicines even Januvia causes a few side effects like: Stuffy nose, runny nose, headache, sore throat, joint pains and diarrhea.
Januvia is processed through the kidneys and Patients who have decreased renal function should talk to their doctors before taking Januvia.
Does Januvia interact with other drugs?
