Generic drugs have emerged as a good alternative
to branded drugs. People can use the drug with the same effect
as compared to any other branded drug. Generic
drugs have witnessed good response from people in average
income group. These are made from the same active ingredients
used by the manufacturers of branded drugs. The difference
lies in their price and banner under which the drug is manufactured
and marketed. The F.D.A.
is an authoritative body that monitors the manufacture and
marketing of drugs. Each and every manufacturing unit is under
strict vigilance of the F.D.A.
An official survey at the departments of Health in Indonesia
suggests that these drugs are in high demand these days. According
to the report by the Indonesian government, some 60 percent
of last year's Rp 22.9 trillion (US$2.51 billion) revenue
in the pharmaceutical market, came from prescription drugs,
of which up to 90 percent were generic drugs.
The Indonesian government is planning to have a separate National
Drug Policy that will monitor all drug related issues ranging
from production, quality, marketing and availability of the
drug.
Since, most of the patent drugs are being manufactured in
America and Europe, the cost of these drugs increases due
to additional expenses. So, the Indonesian government is promoting
the use of generic drugs citing the price at which they are
available in the market.
The government has fixed the maximum price for the drugs with
strict instructions for manufacturers to have the exact price
printed on the packages of the drugs sold in the market.
The report also emphasized the potential of the Indonesian
market for the generic drugs. Generic
drugs market in Indonesia grew by 10 percent last year
and is expected to increase by 11 percent this year as well.
The sales of both generic and branded drugs have shown consistent
growth over the past few years.
Recently, the impact of Bird
Flu in some parts of Asia has compelled the government
to order oseltamivir,
which is a generic version of Roche's influenza prophylaxis
and is largely used to combat Bird Flu.
